History of the Chateau Montelena Winery

The Chateau Montelena Winery CA was founded in 1888 as a barrel-aging facility first known as the A.L. Tubbs Winery. In an age where most wineries were constructed by wood, the Chateau Montelena Winery is made of stone. This unique feature set it apart, and better insulated against the heat or cold. The structure was also built into a hillside, which further regulated temperature. An English Gothic castle gatehouse, narrow arched windows, and bartizans with faux arrow slits are all original features. While the interior was original a large space with a second-story crushing floor, a second-floor apartment was added. This was originally a lived-in space; however, it is now the Chateau Montelena Winery tasting room.
